The French Revolution + Beauty and the Beast by MoonlightWolf17 The French Revolution + Beauty and the Beast by MoonlightWolf17
brace yourselves, this is a looooooong post.

-------

So, I assume you are familiar with the popular fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast." You know, a teenage French girl falls in love with a..um..thing. The original tale was written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and was first published in 1740. But here, I will be talking about the Disney animated film by the same name, "Beauty and the Beast," released in 1991.

So, ever since I watched the live-action film earlier this year, one significant change was that the setting was more historically accurate than its animated counterpart. The extravagance within the French court was more accurately portrayed in the 2017 version than the 1991 version. So this had me wondering...

What if the French Revolution happened in "Beauty and the Beast"?

I have a simple answer to that: It simply wouldn't have happened.

Alright, before anything, I just want to say that this is just a theory. It's not official, so you can have any opinion you'd like for just not have one at all. That's perfectly fine!

A brief history lesson: The French Revolution started in 1789, shortly after the American Revolution had ended. After helping America win the war and gain their independence from Great Britain, France found themselves in debt. There was a shortage of food and other economic goods among the 'common people' and France became a generally impoverished country. The royals and high nobility, however, were living in an impeccable, lavish sanctuary in the Palace of Versailles. Louis XVI of France came into power in 1774 next to his wife, Marie Antoinette. Marie Antoinette was widely considered a fashionista, spending outrageous amounts of money on accessories and articles of clothing. This upset the French people greatly. Eventually, they got sick of their government for not doing anything about the ongoing poverty happening within the country. The king and queen of France ruled until 1789 when the French Revolution overthrew the long-lasting French monarchy and took their heads with it.

Now the reason why I think this wouldn't happen in "Beauty and the Beast" is that there would be no need for revolution. Belle had broken the curse and freed the prince (let's just call him Adam) from his beastly form and his servants from spending the rest of their lives as household items. After that event, the people had no reason to revolt because everyone seemed to be certain that Belle and Adam would bring good to France as the new royal family. Belle is a smart, kind, humble, and beautiful woman who was misunderstood by the people in her hometown. The people criticized her because she liked to read; something very uncommon and almost abnormal for a peasant woman in the 18th century. They didn't hate Belle, they just didn't understand her.

Even when Belle tried to show the people in her provincial village that the Beast was kind and gentle and what not, they refused to believe her and followed Gaston simply because they didn't take the time to understand her claim. Gaston was favored by the town's people because he fit into their idea of what a man should be like and how a man should behave. In the end, the people learned that Belle wasn't so bad after all and that they can learn to embrace her as the woman she is. You know, because it's a Disney movie.

But back to the Revolution, it simply would not fit into this alternate timeline because there would be no reason to revolt against the government. Belle is a girl with values and is very cultured and considerate. If Belle were to become the queen of France, I at least would believe that she would do a much better job at ruling the country than Marie Antoinette. Marie Antoinette was born into luxury and pampered all her life and that eventually led her to the guillotine. Belle, on the other hand, was a peasant girl who wanted to save her father from the Beast's castle. She turned herself in to save her father and after what may have been days, weeks, or even months (the movie never specifies how long it takes for Belle and Adam to fall in love and I must say: very clever on the movie's part) she got to know him and eventually they fall in love. Curse gets broken and then BOOM--happily ever after.

Except for Gatson of course because

you know

he's like, dead.

so.

aNYWAYS-
If the French Revolution were to, in fact, happen in "Beauty and the Beast" then that would contribute to a drastic change to Belle's character. Maybe she...spends all of the money on books?

I don't really know but if it had to happen for some reason, then they're all dead, basically. Apparently, the people that used to live in Belle's provincial town are just a bunch of ungrateful bastards and decided to kill off everybody in the French court. Sorry, Lumiere, you drama queen. Your cries for mercy are not gonna save your ass this time.

jk i love you, precious candle child-

Thank you!
Yeah, I've always imagined Disney being an alternate universe where history doesn't really have to apply.

In official books, it already happened in Belle's youth, in the context of the animated movie, with Gaston free to hunt outside Monarchy privileges.
Of course, if you are a Emma-Belle fan, it's not the same thing that Bill Condon choiced.

Belle will run a literature business in Europe of XIXth, after the Napoleonic Wars, in my minds at least.

Huh, interesting.

I've always assumed that Beauty and the Beast took place in early-mid 18th century. The French Revolution happened in late 18th century. But because I was referring to the 1991 movie and not really the 2017 movie, that idea could fit very well. I used the movies as a bases and not really picked up any books but thank you for sharing this. :D

No problem. I think she will be apart from the romantic intellectual leads of the XIXth century, like the proud "tomboy" George Sand and her boyfriend Chopin.
I think she'll never rule something, knowing monarchy is outdated, more she'll instruct the strawberry blonde little to be a medicine doctor of something like this.
