Okay I just need to vent a little:

I usually draw in my sketchbook during school hours whenever I have the time and even though a part of me doesn't want to draw in public, I still do it. Art is kinda like an addiction for me.

Anyways, I draw in my sketchbook then someone just comes and asks to see it. Sometimes my classmates don't even ask "can I see your drawings" or anything like that. Some people just take it and flip through the pages without my permission. This has been going on ever since I started bringing sketchbooks to school back in 5th grade. I always feel anxious and uncomfortable when people ask me about a doodle or make rude comments about my drawings simply because it's not something they're interested in. My sketchbook is personal. It contains artwork that reflect what I'M feeling. How I see the world. What I like to watch and draw. Art is my escape. Whenever someone grabs my sketchbook, with or without permission, it makes me nervous and even when I say "no," they insist. "Why are you so obsessed with Disney" "why do you draw so many aliens?" "Why does she look so edgy?" Can't you see by my facial expression that I don't want to answer those questions?!

I understand if it's constructive criticism and I'm fine if you're trying to help me or suggest ideas and inspiration. I don't get offended easily and I'm not overly sensitive. But if you're gonna snatch my sketchbook away from my hands and then criticize me, my art and interests, don't bother.

I wonder if my classmates even learned to respect other's personal space...

I'm really considering leaving my sketchbook home for now on. I don't want to because I entertain myself in school with drawing. But this sketchbook thing has been going on for way too long and I'm fucking sick of it.

anyways, im sorry to put this all on you guys. i'm extremely thankful to be part of a community who don't disrespect me for what i happen to like. thank you so much and have a nice day Heart

I've been there, and I hate it. You have every single right to vent about it and I want you to know that you're not alone. And if they don't like your art, then they didn't deserve to see it in the first place.

I know how you feel, Ale. As a fellow creator, I understand the feeling of being self conscious about your work, especially when it isn't the best you could've done. To be fair, I usually shove my poems at my friends and acquaintances and say, "read this for me please!" Yet while I'm so confident about my writing, I'm extremely self conscious about my art. I do a lot of doodling, but I'm usually not proud of the results, even though I've improved a lot lately. I have a habit of doodling on school papers, but the doodles almost always end up quickly erased whether I'm proud of them or not. I just feel so uncomfortable sharing most of my art even with my friends, since so many of them are absolutely stunning artists. I feel like the odd one out, and what I imagine in my head can never get to the paper. That's why I usually have my friends draw book covers for me and why I love seeing your work. However, it's still a refreshing feeling when you're really proud of a piece, and you wish to show it to everyone you can. This doesn't happen to me very often, but I've had some moments. Friends and family are always a great source of feedback and encouragement. Heck, I have a grandma who acts as if I'm the greatest creator on the planet and makes sure all her friends know so. It can be embarrassing, but it's nice to know you're appreciated. And if this is where you feel appreciated, Ale, then never give up.

You're are so incredibly kind. <:^)

Honestly, I was never much of a writer. I do write occasionally but I draw most of the time. I totally understand that feeling of embarrassment. There are many times were I'm not proud of a certain piece and I just want to discard it. My family members support me and say that am extremely talented for my age but I usually draw for the hell of it. I always look to improve my art skill and it's so frustrating when people around keep picking on it. For example, drawing naked people is anatomy practice for an artist while for someone else who doesn't draw, it's weird and perverted. Of course, I'm not drawing naked people at school, like hell I would. But it's irritating to be constantly saying "don't touch my sketchbook!"

Anyways...

Thank you so much. I really appreciate the comment. Heart Heart  It's comforting to know that there are friends who get where I'm coming from.

I totally get the same feeling when people walk over and see what I'm drawing. But honestly, no one has ever gone as far as to snatch my sketchbook from me. Even at the slightly shitty school I have to go to, where the kids talk about nothing but drugs, drugs, and more drugs. :/

If I were to give you any tips to prevent people from doing that, I'd say you could try, idk, covering the stuff you already have drawn with a piece of paper? Honestly, I'm not sure how I'd deal with that kind of thing...

It's alright, Mak.
That school sounds like hell if you ask me.
It's best if I just draw at home. Even my mom says that "art is for my own satisfaction and i shouldn't draw things i don't want to draw for others"

Sorry to hear that. Gosh, I can't stand people who don't respect personal space, other's property or interests.
Just don't let that bring you down. Sometimes, a little bit of venting is all an agitated mind needs to settle down once again.
I -for one- am very happy you are a part of the community and I love looking at your art, even if it's not always about Disney. Your ideas never cease to mesmerize me and your general style is just so, so gorgeous. Heart

Yeah I needed to do this for a while now and I'm so glad I did.
I'm very happy I have my watchers. Seriously. Deviantart is a weird site and I don't like most of it but there are things that I love about this site and this is one of them.

fucking assholes, like why???? they dont even do that to me, ill just obscure my thing from view and if they see me drawing and ask me to see, i'll just hide it and usually say no.
if they tried to take it from me i would fucking murder them, like, i always use sharp pencils, so uh

Don't let them though! And if you have to leave your sketchbook at home, do it.
If you still want to draw though, i recommend drawing on a sheet of paper leaned inside like a book or something, and have weaponry like a sharp pencil and/or killer nails to defend yourself
last resort is flipping them off

if i could i would go over there and fi  g h t  t he m

Oh dang. Like that's terrible. I draw mostly gore and people are like

"Are you depressed?"
"Is that vent art?"
"Is that a boy or a girl?" (Yeah mostly I put my characters as androgynous)
"Can't you draw something happy?"
"No one will accept you as an artist if you just draw edgy shit"
"What is up with you and gore? There is more than black and white"

Like jfc I draw what I want even if it makes no sense whats so ever

At school I've even gotten in trouble for drawing since the school deemed by drawings as me showing I am "Depressed" or I am wanting to "Kill myself" like god. I draw happy stuff, but just adding a little blood makes me look like a future murderer?

My god stereotypes need to stop NOW.
